Last month I had the pleasure of previewing this season’s trends at the Neiman Marcus Trend Report luncheon at Fashion Valley Mall — a precious few hours with my some of my favorite “F” words = fashion, food, and FALL! And its fabulous backdrop, my beloved Neiman Marcus, made the experience that much more enjoyable. Not only for its high breed of fashion, but also because their fashion advisor, Alex Yáñez, is a styling genius. From his brilliant pairings, I was able to go into my own closet and decipher what I already owned into looks that would be spot on for this fall ;)
When you’re #stylecrazed artist like myself, I believe there are so many times when you attend these fashion events and/or open a Vogue, you feel the pressure to get out that credit card in order to be adequate to what’s in right now. I’ve quickly learned, however, that with the right knowledge and a little creativity, you probably already have more than you realize. And this season, this self-taught lesson was truer than ever. With the NM list I was provided at the luncheon, I am now able to share with you three new outfits I have never worn before with only purchasing two items, both under $40.
Yes, that’s right! I only purchased two of these items in these pictures in order to make these looks happen. Isn’t that exciting?! Well, at least I hope you’re excited, because I AM! Lol ;) Okay, so what are the trends this season? For women, it’s all about high-shine metallics, ripe berry shades, velvet EVERYTHING, fall florals, skirts that move, bomber jackets, chokers, top-handle bags, adorned shoes, and the dramatic eye. Yeah, it can seem like a pretty daunting list . . . but instead of stressing out, I stuck with what worked for me and my own personal breed of style.
For example, I have four eyes ;) thus I won’t do a dramatic eye with my makeup. My eyewear IS my embellishment. I also don’t currently own that many items in a ripe berry shade, not because I don’t like it, I simply just don’t. So I decided for this trend both my glasses and my lips would be the accent of this shade. And this is how I went through the entire NM list; reusing items I already had in my arsenal. Like this dELiA*s denim jacket [I bet that’s brand you haven’t heard in a while] that I purchased back in college. Yes, it’s not a bomber jacket per say, but since the 90s style I love to hate is back with a vengeance I knew a denim jacket couldn’t hurt. OR how about my laser-cut J.Crew skirt that I acquired last season. It’s definitely a skirt that moves and would honestly work perfectly interchanged with many of the other items in these outfits. Anyway, I think you’re catching my drift. I reused what I already owned, and BAM! A new wardrobe was born.
“That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” — Gianni Versace
And I find this to be the most exhilarating kind of fashion = when I can go into my own closet and make new outfits out of older items! Now, can you guess which two items I purchased both for under $40 each in these photos? Hmmm. Give up? It was the choker [of course] and these beautiful blue velvet platform shoes that someone will most likely have to pry out of my dead cold hands someday. I mean they are fabulous, right?! HAHA! Velvet for life! Lol. Please let me know what you think of this fall trends and how well you liked/loved/hated the outfits I created in the comments below as I am always open to your feedback. Have a wonderful rest of your week, y’all and always remember to do you and no one else when it comes to living your fashionable life! MUAH!
